Choral Music Education in the 21st Century

     When I first started this project, I was going to use a topic closer to my inquiry topic about choosing appropriate  repertoire, but I found the topic to be a bit too wordy and hard to visualize for students, so I decided to change gears to a different aspect of the  inquiry  topic.        When figuring out what images to put with print, I found in very easy  with my new topic, Understanding Solfege since solfege is a very visual thing, the best way to teach it is to show it visually and physically in relation to sound. I used a n image of  simple C  major  scale  with  each corresponding solfege syllable to show which syllable goes to which note and how at the high C the solfege syllables restart back to “do” the way  the letter note cycles every  seven n otes .     My topic that I plan to explore is choosing well-balanced, relevant and  appropriate choral repertoire. This is a topic that I will not only explore in this class but in my future career to come. As a student who has been apart of choirs since they were twelve, I find that this topic is always changing and always being reevaluated with the times. It is very important because as music educators, we owe our students many unique musical experiences whether by including music that is not traditionally choral as well as many different types of cultural music.      Already as a student,  I know to create a well balanced repertoire, students should learn songs in different languages to fully embrace that music the way it was originally intended.     Hello! My name is Joseph Schmidt and I am a Choral & General Music Education  Major here at UWM. Along with pursuing a BFA in Choral & General Mus Ed, I am also pursing a Minor in Theatre. I have been involved with music and theatre in some capacity for a large part of my upbringing and all of my adult life.
